Medan Airport : GMR Group India Will develop and operate Medan Airport in Indonesia - THE AVIATION NEWS


GMR Group has won the bid to develop and operate the Kualanamu International Airport in Medan, Indonesia. 

It will tie up with state-owned Angkasa Pura 2 (AP2), which handles 15 airports in the country including at capital Jakarta, and operate Kualanamu for 25 years. 

GMR, the largest private airport operator in Asia and fourth largest globally, handles over 17.2 crore passengers annually in pre-Covid times. 

Its operational airport portfolio includes India’s busiest IGIA in Delhi, Hyderabad and Mactan-Cebu International Airport in Cebu, Philippines. 

GMR is currently developing three major greenfield airports at Goa, Visakhapatnam and Crete in Greece.


Medan is Indonesia’s fourth largest urban area and the capital of North Sumatra province.

 GMR will enter into a 49:51 partnership with AP2 for this project. 

Medan Airport handled over 1 crore passengers in 2018. The project scope includes operation, brownfield development and expansion of the airport over 25 years. 

“The letter of award is expected to be issued in next few days, post bid formalities, while signing of project agreements before end of the year,” GMR statement said.
